Crawlspace
A true crime musical
Music by Matt Glickstein
Book & Lyrics by Jason Spraggins
Years after interviewing accused serial killer John Wayne Gacy, Dr. Judy Matthewson remains haunted by the case. As a forensic psychologist, she’s spent her career searching for the cause of violence and abuse in the brain. She’s sifted through the dark corners of human depravity with scientific detachment. But to her, John’s story is different—an abyss she can’t cross. The Doctor believes this old case still holds secrets and answers buried in its wreckage.
Convinced she missed something during her interviews with John, she revisits her time with him. His story conjures images of his childhood, adult life, murders, and arrest, blurring reality and a troubled psyche. John embodies contradiction. He’s a family man, community leader, outgoing neighbor, and part-time clown who throws elaborate yard parties. He’s also a violent criminal and unreliable narrator who claims to have multiple personality disorder (DID in today’s terminology). Answers don’t come easily.
As the Doctor digs deeper, the exposure to John’s twisted tale forces her to face her own ghosts. Crawlspace goes on a mind-bending descent into the deep recesses of the human mind, exploring the enigmatic edges of sanity, the risks of true crime obsession, and the lasting legacies of abuse.

A Special Note about Crawlspace:
Gacy's crimes and conviction make him a public figure. His victims never chose such recognition. Therefore, their names and specific stories have been altered. Care has been taken to honor their privacy while still effectively conveying the tragedy, impact, and consequences of their deaths. Crawlspace seeks to respectfully bring awareness and understanding to all victims of violence and abuse without exploitation or sensationalism.
Content Warning Crawlspace contains emotionally intense and potentially challenging material, including themes and depictions that may be unsettling to some viewers. Audience discretion is advised. Recommended for ages 16 and up.

“The entire effect pulls you into the monstrous mystery tour; if you decide to go, accept the horror as part of the plan, then suspend all expectations and assumptions and buckle-up for the carnival ride."
-“Perverse Redemption and Problematic Earworms: The World Premiere of Crawlspace,” Teacher on the Radio WTTU 88.5 FM
“True crime is criticized for affirming the killer's 'main character' status in murder. Crawlspace represents the other side of the bill… (and) engaged the audience's emotions with a sincerity I didn't expect.”
-Dr. Erin Hoover,
The Herald Citizen, Cookeville, TN
“I saw Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins and remember wondering if it had been the work of an unknown writer would it have seen the light of day? I was far more engaged by Crawlspace and hope it finds the success it deserves.”
-Steven Hollingsworth, Chattanooga, TN
