Licensing Your Play

SO YOUR SHOW PREMIERED, NOW WHAT?

Explore strategic licensing for audience, and income growth.

Rightsholders have a vested interest in the continual exposure of their show. Too often, hard work is poured into a New York or world premiere, only to have months or even years go by without another production or penny in sight.

At Broadway DNA, we believe in connecting theatremakers— of all career stages— with international brand and revenue growth.

Licensing your work for others to perform can strengthen a show’s brand awareness, drive consumers back to core productions or offerings, and create a new revenue stream. Strategic licensing helps rightsholders launch in new markets with a low risk burden while growing and creating happiness among fan bases.

Licensing offers other goals too:

  • Passive income offers financial cushion for playwrights, unlocking freedom and flexibility

  • Launch in a new market outside core competency or premiere

  • Leverage brand equity without building inventory or debt

  • Create a high volume of show impressions with minimal cost or complexity

  • Reach new audiences

  • Test new edits or expansions

  • Establish a new catalyst for positive word of mouth that could lead to First Class (Broadway/West End) demand

How It Works

  • Broadway DNA is always on the lookout for new voices who might be a good fit for us. We are proactive global theatre goers, keeping track of what artists are making in the US and abroad, so that our work, practices, and licenses can sit at the forefront of contemporary practice and trends.

The main way to get yourself on our radar is to Contact Us. Introduce yourself, invite us to see your work, and submit samples. We’ll set up an Introductory Meeting if we think the show is a fit with Broadway DNA.

  • Broadway DNA works on behalf of shows and playwrights to strategize, pitch, negotiate, and contract amateur and professional theater licenses around the world.

Where We Work: Our focus is on expanding your show’s reach beyond your Base Country (most often, this means outside the U.S.). We can also work with you to carve out Western or specific markets based on your goals for future development or First Class producing opportunities (I.e. Broadway/West End). In select instances, we also represent U.S. licensing rights.

Our licensing program is a royalty-based agency agreement for Broadway DNA to be the exclusive international representative for your show’s theatrical licensing. Due to time needed to educate potential producers about new shows as well as a high variance in each country’s season planning lead times, our standard licensing agreement covers a negotiable 5 year term and 30-40% commission based on our assessment of marketability and global fit.* No up-front or hidden fees; we don’t get paid unless you do.

    How You Get Paid:

    • Professional licenses: Writers get paid via an advance fee or “guarantee” (paid on signing) against a ticket sales royalty rate, based on the production’s gross potential. If/Once the royalty exceeds the advance, Writers receive additional monies accordingly. Writers also get paid a royalty percentage on all Merchandise and Promotions, if applicable.

    • Amateur licenses: Writers get paid via a flat fee based on the production’s gross potential.

    * Key to our innovative business model is connecting new, unknown work to licensing opportunities around the world. As primarily non-famous titles, our shows require PROactive instead of REactive agency work, drawing on personal relationships and pitches cultivated over our years of experience to cut through the noise and educate global markets about the shows we represent. We are invested in doing the legwork to establish then promote your show’s recognition and growth throughout the world markets, and our fee reflects this partnership.

  • At Broadway DNA, we believe the difference between building a play and a property is strategic intention. Working hand-in-hand with the Writers we sign, we develop a show-specific pitch strategy to reach the best suited markets and venues/producers based on the unique DNA of the show.

Strategic licensing requires a diverse mindset that can champion strategy, vet partners with time-tested criteria, negotiate on behalf of shows and playwrights with economics and legal protection in mind, and manage licensees toward production in keeping with the writers’ and original show’s DNA and goals.

Some key factors taken into consideration include aligning show size and genre with market and producer history and trends. For more information on trends, subscribe to our global newsletter Broadway DNA Blog.

Once a licensee is interested, every licensing deal requires Author Approval to be confirmed.

Success in strategic licensing means far more than chasing after the big idea.  It’s about what makes each show unique, and we can’t wait to work with you and show the world what you’re made of.

By investing in your show’s potential, we seek to leverage a more swift diversification of the global theatre landscape.

Access to international impact, cultural exchange, and passive income shouldn’t be reserved only for the “biggest” shows and creators.
